Opposition attacks rudds racist mining tax
But Labor’s support for a mining tax is seen as key to the party’s chances in Sunday’s election, with a huge chunk of its membership backing the measure.
The proposal, which Labor wants to be passed on to the Federal Government’s budget, would reduce the tax rate by 10.2 per cent on all mines that are set aside for minerals exploration.
Treasurer Scott Morrison said a 20 per cent tax on all mining companies amounted to a $2 billion saving to the government.
“When it comes to fighting poverty and helping out people in remote communities, the Liberal Party wants to fight on a bipartisan basis.”
Mr Morrison said a 15 per cent mining tax was the “reasonable compromise” that would increase the GST revenue but would raise the price of mining equipment in the country.
A Labor spokesman said Labor’s vote to support a mining tax was an embarrassment for Labor.
“It really is a slap in the face to communities struggling across our country to find work, to those who may have found themselves out of work with their jobs,” the spokesman said.
The mining tax is being advocated by many mining companies as a way of boosting exports and the Federal Government hopes to pass it through the next budget.
Earlier this week, Opposition Leader Bill Shorten said he hoped Labor would support the mining tax, even if it cost millions in jobs.
